About Me

A footwear Specialist, Graduating from Ravensbourne

Born and raised in London, but brought up from Ghanaian heritage. It would be difficult to find a project or brief that hasn't combined her african british culture, explicitly or hidden. Everything produced, made , designed from Edwina must be a true reflection of her design language and aesthetics.

With a strong interest in fashion from a very young age, learning how to hand sew at age 6 was the stepping stone. Now, I specialize in Footwear, specifically 3D printing footwear. The love of collaboration with other creatives such as architects and product designers , allowed me to see a different angle to footwear. I love to create outside of the box, and with collaboration anything is possible. Having knowledge of the creative industry outside of fashion itself brings new and interesting techniques that have elevated and challenged my design process since I could remember.

INSPIRATION

My youthful love of Jazz and music carried the inspiration for my collection

The history of jazz Music , let alone the history of music itself in association with the black community has strong relations to expression, freedom and passion, all of which I wanted to capture within my collection. From an early age, I learnt how to play the keyboard, saxophone and trumpet, it was difficult not to initially gravitate towards the literal interpretation of music and shoes. Through development and experimentation the collection became shaped by soundwaves.

I was able to transform 2D soundwaves into 3D forms by curating a unique algorithm using the grasshopper software on Rhino 7 This algorithm allowed me to create unique and innovative forms and shapes for my soles which were printed via SLA and PLA. Using knitwear for the uppers for my shoes that were also inspired by both, the ghanaian traditional cloth: kente and some distorted soundwaves from the song selected (Nina Simone - four women)

MY WORK

PORTFOLIOS

DETAIL

Details

Although footwear is a non practical prototype. All flat shoes have a unique leather x neoprene insole whilst the heels are lined with the respective jacquard knit print- All soles are 3D printed (heels SLA, flats PLA) - Uppers are made from designer plated and jacquard knit. My 4 prototypes each created to be shared through a borrow/lend type business model with a QR code that will take you to an online signature space. Everyone who wears the shoe becomes a part of its history forever. This business model also has a sustainability aspect, meaning instead of buying one pair to only wear once , consumers can rent it for their specific event/performance/holiday and then send it back to go through the same process, preserving materials, labor and money.

I hope to continue to share the importance of music and arts and its influence on culture.Music is liberation, music is expression, music is important.
