About Me

Hi, I’m Ed, a fashion design graduate from Kingston University

Ed Gibbs is a menswear designer specialising in multi-functional, high performance and transformational technical clothing. Additionally, he focuses on the importance of attainable, desirable clothing that does not go to waste, blurring the lines between sportswear and streetwear.

During lockdown, I watched various documentaries on climbing and extreme sports and wanted to understand why they did it, which evolved the concept for my collection ‘Avgörande’. With my research, I have combined my interest in graphic design, music production and photography to inspire silhouette and print, and to add originality to my work. I have created the collection whilst exploring the latest trend in fashion, Gorpcore. Essentially a practical, high performance sub-genre of streetwear, those in the Gorpcore community dress with practicality at the forefront, and aesthetic secondary.

INSPIRATION

Avgörande: Finding Purpose In Meaningless Exploration

Avgörande (Swedish) translates to a “deciding moment.” The brand is driven by the personal application of emotion to activities that have little to no purpose, with influences of extreme sports, exploration and freedom creating the brand slogan “Finding purpose in meaningless exploration”. Those who explore extreme terrains are putting their life at risk for unexplained reasoning. Avgörande aims to personify the environment; mountains, tents, topography and specific details such as rock-climbing holds.

In the 21st century it is no longer a choice to be environmentally conscious, it is now imperative that action is taken. Avgörande focuses on the importance of owning small amounts of garments that are multi-functional, long lasting. Buy once, use constantly. Exploring systems of sourcing and re-using already-created garments for fabrication is an idea in motion for the brand.

DETAIL

Transformational Portaledge Outfit

The Portaledge Jacket, inspired by tough climbing routes where mountaineers would sleep on the cliffside thousands of feet above sea level. Transformable silhouette to imitate the climbers unpacking and packing up their portable home each day during the climb. Two double-zipped Avgörande box pockets. Stowaway hood. Fully waterproof fabric, double layered for extra protection. Portaledge bag, a detachable bag, hanging from the portaledge, for extra carry space. Avgörande El Capitan climbing routes embroidered. The Portaledge Pant, fabric pleats imitating the climbing holds on a cliff-face, with navy elastic channels representing climbing routes of El Capitan. Fully adjustable pull toggles on front and back of pant, making the silhouette fully customisable. Avgörande logo printed. Base Jump Pullover made of a lycra-jersey hybrid. “Flight pits” inspired by wingsuits used in base jumping. Rest of garment created with functionality in mind, thumbholes and a relaxed fit.
