About Me

HI, I’M QIWAN DONG, A GRADUATE FROM BUNKA FASHION COLLEGE

Since I was a child I liked painting, so my mother arranged for me to train and study at an art school. At the school I came into contact with many different artistic things. Gradually, I was drawn to every aspect of fashion. I started buying fashion magazines in Junior High School. Some of my favourites include Vogue and WWD.

The message I want to convey is that beauty exists in different ways. The consciousness is sealed in clothing, and the creation of fashion goes beyond the boundary, breaking the limitation of thinking. Dare to innovate and try different forms of beauty.

INSPIRATION

MY INITIAL IDEA WAS INSPIRED BY THE FILM “ANNIHILATION”, WHICH IS ABOUT AN UNKNOWN AREA

The unknown area is called ‘The Shimmer’. Many different groups of explorers enter the area, and almost all of them are annihilated in some way. The whole ‘shimmer’ is an area full of mystery. How the entrance and boundaries were formed are a mystery. Every creature, every plant, scene and sentence within ‘the shimmer’ is a mystery. In “Annihilation”, The plants and animals inside have mutated, with strange shapes and bright colours, which leaves me with a kind of beautiful strangeness.

Perhaps this is a beautiful history of human evolution. Human beings have separated from the simple individual state and shared the same fate with nature. Maybe this is the way for advanced life forms to continue. This series of clothing, I use the colours in Vuillard's works to match, hoping to present the strange beauty I felt when I first saw the film. In the film, human life will last forever in the form of plants, and I hope my consciousness will last forever through my works.

MY WORK

PORTFOLIOS

DETAIL

I USED A LOT OF COLOURED MESH AND TULLE TO MAKE DIFFERENT VISUAL EFFECTS ON MY CLOTHING.

I chose a non-traditional colour palette, where typically you may think the colours clash. I like rich colours. And maybe people are more comfortable when a traditional suit made out of the one colour throughout, but I think a mixture of rich and bright colours are more eye-catching. In the collision design of colors, I tried not to blindly mix colours at will. I used the discovery of different ways as a reference, such as, colour matching paintings, hues in movies and more. The early preparation, for me, needed to be carried out carefully in order to make a satisfactory design. All kinds of gather designs were made with tulle, in which a straight line is sewn by a sewing machine for pleating, and different effects were created by adjusting the tightness. The other is to sew an irregular circle and then perform pleating. In this way, the middle of a piece of cloth will protrude. I have mastered the skills to make the combination and pattern into something more beautiful, like a flower.
