About Me

A Fashion Design Graduate from Cardiff School or Art and Design

Don Barbosa is a Filipino born British Designer who specialises primarily in Menswear as well as having designed Womenswear. His work derives from a need to explore his cultural roots as a Filipino as well as embracing what is British Culture that he grew up in.

His passionate nature is what drives him to want to carry on learning more about the intricacies of design, being inspired by all medias that art can take form in. From pattern cutting, digital work, to styling, and everything else in between he is ready to take on all challenges with a willingness to learn from anyone who will teach him.

INSPIRATION

YOU by DON

His designs stem from introspection. Remembering to look at the past whilst living in the present, meaning that he often looks back at his childhood to reminisce on lived experiences and presenting it in the modern. With self reflection, his work is a truly unique perspective, which aims to bridge the two cultures for all those who can relate to the material.

His designs are an embodiment of the Filipino spirit of making something out of nothing, using all materials and resources available to him to create entire collections. He understands that fashion should be a reflection of who you are, not the trends you follow to fit in. In the heart of his work, he believes that honesty is the most important in creating a form of art.

PORTFOLIOS

DETAIL

CULTURE & HERITAGE

The collection was not just made for Filipinos but to all those that feel that they are not culturally in tune with their ethnicity anymore, having forgotten or not experienced enough of their culture whilst living in Britain. Details from the collection revisits tattoo culture in the Philippines and an old traditional Filipino rain cape from the Tinggian Tribe and modernises it. Changing the once cape into a wearable plywood vest using laser cut techniques on wood, it enables plywood to bend and morph into the garments presented. The idea of reinventing something old to something new is where my design ethos lies. To not fix something that isn't broken but to reimagine it completely to serve a new purpose, thus giving it new uses and allowing it to live past old traditions.

"One's heritage and roots is something to be proud of and cherished." - Sonja Morgan
