About Me

I’m Chloe a graduate from the UOD with a year of industry experience

Chloe was inspired by her adoration of 80’s hip hop culture, graffiti and her background as a dancer. The collection is named ‘ANEMOIA’ meaning a nostalgic longing for a time you have never lived. She collaborated with the graffiti artist SINS to produce a piece based on her slogan for the collection ‘SO I DANCE’, encompassing everything she feels when dancing

“Dance is how I have been able to connect with hip hop culture, it gives you the freedom of expression that nothing else will, a universal human language”, says Chloe. “I have been able to immerse myself into graffiti culture by working with SINS which has informed and validated my work”. “Nostalgia is a way to escape to a past era, cope with change, and relive a different life through clothing. Insightful research and first-hand experiences have shaped my collection to evoke anemoia, with a unique edge and personal connection.”

INSPIRATION

I was inspired by graffiti, hip hop culture and nostalgic 80’s hip hop silhouettes

I have always been intrigued by graffiti, it blurs the line between legality and art, its transient nature is intrinsically nostalgic. The anonymity of graffiti allows the artist to be exempt from scrutiny and the work to speak for itself. Working with SINS was an incredible experience; I learned how to paint, the tools and techniques required and about the graffiti community. As I dove into hip hop culture I loved the fresh style and emphasis on individuality, intertwined with rap music and dance.

Eras and cultures can be personified by dance; the fashion, movement and language define hip hop as an era, paying homage to this each outfit in my line up is named after a hip hop move. I have danced since I was three, it is my outlet and passion and allows me to express myself. Dance has been hugely influential to this collection as a source of connection to hip hop culture. I can relate to the freedom they felt when dancing and the anguish they could express through the movement.

MY WORK

PORTFOLIOS

DETAIL

My outfit features sublimation printing, applique, embroidery and contrast stitching

The prints were created using photos of the graffiti piece; I digitally edited the prints experimenting with opacity, layering and colour dynamics. This pays homage to how DJs would remix tracks in the 80’s and gives the print a more abstract and dynamic visual impact. The printed mesh panel showcases the original graffiti, the contrasting fabric weight combination is a unique feature on the outfit. The embroidered badges were inspired by the patches used on 80’s hip hop garments to customise them. The badges feature myself and SINS tag and the slogan, they can also be repositioned, this adds a personal touch to the garments allowing the wearer to customise their look. I used contrast stitching on the denim jacket as a design feature and to highlight the construction. The drawstring channels manipulate the oversized shape of the jumper which refines the silhouette. Chains were a staple accessory in hip hop style, I incorporated them on the jacket cuffs and trouser waistband as a subtle design feature.
