Chloe Grayson is a fashion designer from the North of England specialising in womenswear. Her work is textural, graphic, and print-driven, often inspired by modern art and cultural references. Alongside researching, designing, and making the garments she has also created promotional content and items, including accessories and a publication.
I have studied Fashion Design and Marketing for 4 years; in this time, I have vastly developed my skill set and knowledge about the industry. During my studies, it came to light how important it was to create a brand that had a fully transparent supply chain, whilst educating the consumer on the importance of this. I use environmental and socially sustainable practices to ensure people have fair and safe working environments. I use my brand as a catalyst for the celebration of those who are working in the industry, bringing light to those lost in the depths of the supply chain.
INSPIRATION
Alongside being sustainable it was important for my brand to feel comforting and exciting, closing the gap between creativity and fashion. Encouraging involvement through workshops and experiences to enhance personal wellbeing and connectivity. This began with the strawberry motif logo which is completely synonymous with the brand and first collection. I wanted to ensure each collection has textural elements, this led me to punch needling which has become a key technique used within the brand.
For the first collection, “it’s only love give it away” I began by focusing on the notion of juxtaposition, using influences from modern art, and culture around me, specifically from experiences that I had documented across my past year that meant a lot to me. Capturing my grandparents dancing together was one of these experiences, this became the foundation of the graphic floral print. For silhouette, I was inspired by past generations of men’s workwear in my family juxtaposed with classically femineity.
DETAIL
I made 4 garments from the collection, the dress being the key piece. All garments have been made out of cotton, wool, silk, or an upcycled fabric blend. The waistcoat was hand dyed to create the perfect shade of pink to compliment the digitally printed cotton dress. The waistcoat has 16 100% wool strawberry applique patches, which were laser cut and hand embroidered onto the garment. The middle of the strawberries were hand punch needled using 100% cotton yarn in tones of pink to create depth and texture. I handcrafted the buttons on the velvet jacket and dress using clay to perfectly suit the collection. I also did this with the bead detailing on the dress.
