About Me

I'm Chaemin, a fashion design graduate from NTU

Developing unique silhouettes and playful prints have always been my key areas to experiment with throughout my design journey. The desire to create innovative silhouettes made me specialise in pattern cutting and corresponding manufacturing techniques. I also believe that the quality of garments makes a difference.

'Unconventional' and 'Unexpected', new things always make me excited to explore and especially combinations from two completely different areas have been given inspiration to me. I am always aiming for quality work for luxurious collections. Colours and prints are inseparable from my design process, they have been a huge part of my design aesthetics and they also represent who I am as a fashion designer.

INSPIRATION

My final collection 'BLURRED BOUNDARIES: The Imaginings of the Uncanny Allure.' is inspired by...

The two main keywords to describe my concept for FMP are Surrealism and Hybridity. I always have been questioning standardised aesthetics, and the very notion of surrealism, “The willingness to challenge imposed values and norms”, inspired me re-identify the values of uncanny and peculiar beauty in this project.

The idea of surrealism expands to Twisted glamour to find out the allure of the Uncanny and redefines the new genre of beautifulness by experimenting with the unexpected and unconventional hybrid. For further contrast and hybrid, I took inspiration from the tradition (Korean tradition) in print development and reproduce the tradition into modern visual culture.

DETAIL

Collection details

Through voluminous pleating and silhouettes that mirror that of 20th century glamour, my final collection presents a conventional femininity and elegance, but with an aspect of androgyny through unconventional fabric choices such as scuba neoprene for the jacket. Screen printing techniques have used to create prints for the sleeves of jacket and the fabrics for pleats. I aim to create the jacket more unique and dynamic by utilising screen printing on the sleeves. To make my garments surreal, I screen printed the fabrics before they are pleated for the skirt so that it looks uneven and surreal in a far distance. All the pleats in my collections were hand-pleated to understand the craftsmanship and the pleats are my key usp for the final collection. For more details, I designed the dress with the whole on the middle of the body to continue the surreal feelings and to show the printed top and trousers with interesting waist cuttings details.
