The inspiration for this project came from the surrealism art movement, which is what the final collection is named after. I begun by researching into photographers such as Man Ray, Horst P. Horst, and Dora Maar. The aim was explore and express the fascination of the unknown.
The Black Panther Star Constellation print was the first thing I created for this project, and became the inspiration and driving force for the rest of the project. The print consists of small star shapes, arranged into a formation to create the look of a panthers head formed into its own constellation.
INSPIRATION
The concept for 'The Surreal' project, is made up of four elements. The first was the Black Panther Star Constellation Print. The second is based upon the projection experiment I did at the start of the first term. We were unable to access the studios due to lockdown restrictions, because of this I decided to print off the photographers work I had been researching, cut out small sections of the image and project it on my wall and mannequins using the flashlight from my phone.
The third is based upon the prints I created using household objects I found such as masking tape, bubble wrap, string, washing up sponges, and cardboard, in order to create prints that look unrecognisable from their original source. The fourth consisted of research from the Golden Age of Couture, in particularly Dior's New Look, 1947. The construction of the bar suit jacket became the inspiration for my silhouette designs.
DETAIL
The final lineup of 'The Surreal' project consists of all four elements of my concept I had set out for myself to explore, Star constellations, The projection experiments, The Texture experiments, and the Golden Age of Couture.
