Knowing how the world around me, and the things with in it, work has always interested me. When designing, I like to focus on the physical aspect. The making of the garment and how that can affect the outcome. I also like to take into account the message that my designs can send to someone who sees it.
However, the most important part of a garment is how it makes the wearer feel when wearing it. This is something I want to continue focusing on as I develop and work on newer and better things. My passion in leather stems from a love of craftsmanship and the time and dedication necessary when crafting something by hand.
INSPIRATION
The collection ‘Aquelarre Hechizador’, meaning bewitching coven, speaks of Spanish witchcraft, the persecution of those deemed witches by the Spanish inquisition and the depiction if it all through Spanish art. Witchcraft and those who have practised it throughout the years are often misrepresented as evil and worshippers of the devil. Their true nature along with their beauty and femininity are often lost and forgotten.
Juxtaposing the use of leather with fluid fabrics that can drape helps portray the strength that the women needed as well as their beauty and softness. Silhouettes developed from the depiction of a coven in ‘El Aquelarre’ by Goya. Reworking garments like corsets and bodices to contemporary pieces and moving away from function whilst keeping it in mind. The colour palette is driven by navy blue, oranges and black. They are woven throughout the outfits working in conjunction with the Goya prints on leather.
DETAIL
For this project I had to make sure that I found the best way to sew the leather together. I wanted to keep the the handworked quality of leatherwork in the stitching. As such I used a type of stitch that was part machine stitched and part hand stitched.
