About Me

Hello, I'm Cailee, a womenswear designer specialising in print design.

As a designer, Cailee is inspired by intricate details, she is often playing with layering within her work to create playful and exciting collections. She aims to create a collection to promote female empowerment and celebrate the female body.

Through her print work, Cailee uses her research on Japanese tattooing to inspire design development. By using various mediums such as watercolours, pencil studies, and acrylics; as well as experimenting with layering inks, Cailee creates textures within her prints by manipulating the shadows and highlights of her hand-drawn studies.

INSPIRATION

A print collection that draws inspiration from Japanese tattooing and shibari.

The inspiration behind my collection is drawn from Japanese culture, most importantly, forbidden Japanese tattooing and shibari; the art of ropes. Through my research, I discovered that what was once known as a method of torture, shibari is now considered an art form, a technique that is even included in fetishism within bondage culture. From this research, I was inspired to use ropes as part of fabric manipulation techniques, combining this with silhouette research from traditional kimono styles.

Throughout project 2: Oh Darling, Stars Never Pay, I was inspired by the character Elsa Mars on the series American Horror Story: Freak show and the spiraling lifestyle that is shown throughout. This collection draws print inspiration from Elsa's misunderstood attitude and her alternate personalities shown behind her hard-skinned failed success story. From Elsa's chaotic lifestyle I was inspired to use abstract mark-making with romantic colours referenced from her glamourous 1930's style bedroom.

DETAIL

Layering to Create Depth

Layering has been a key focus within my collections, I enjoy working in 2D with my prints carefully selecting colours to create moods that reflect my projects. With my 3D work, I have used moulage to visual communicate my research. My work often features ruffles and ruching as focal points shows movement and create volume to celebrate my prints. Through this I have developed as a designer to establish my design identity.

'They offer their oddities to the world.' Elsa Mars
