About Me

Hi, I’m Bryony, a Fashion Design and Technology graduate from MFI.

As a designer, I want my designs to make an impact: whether that be on first look or upon closer inspection. I try to design with detail in mind and particularly in this collection, I have focussed on creating a body of work that encompasses exciting fabrications, sparkly embellishments and expensive finishes.

For my FMP, I decided to embrace new and interesting fabrics to develop a collection that brings together fun and sophistication in a way which I have never seen done before. My FMP collection is entitled ‘BASIC BUT NEVER BORING’ as the initial concept was derived from basic bitches, and the way they are looked down upon for being ‘unoriginal’ and ‘unnoteworthy’. I wanted to take the derogatory term ‘basic bitch’ and turn it into something to be worn as a badge of honour rather than seen as an insult towards women who look and dress a certain way.

INSPIRATION

Basic should never be considered a bad thing – this is where my inspiration came from.

‘Basic bitch’ is a derogatory term used by those who see people that follow trends, as unoriginal and clichéd. I wanted to showcase basic in a new light and giving people an opportunity to wear their basicness as a badge of honoured. My initial inspiration came from looking at chick flicks and how the main characters dressed. The clothing consisted of miniskirts and matching co-ords which inspired me to look at 90s fashion and how that decade has influenced the modern day.

My research then moved to fabrications and what type of fabric would suit the consumer and garments in my collection. This process included looking through my own wardrobe at similar garments and looking at the fabrics and finishes used. As I wanted to create a ‘badge of honour’ as a part of this collection, I also looked into brands that use embellishments, embroidery and jewels to create logos. It is important for my collection to give the consumer the urge to wear whatever they want and feel proud.

DETAIL

Detail was key in creating this collection – jewels, embroidery, empowerment.

My collection is intended to have a powerful presence and from first glance, may be perceived as basic but when looked at closely, it gives something new to the basic fashion realm. The details used throughout this collection, signify a badge of honour that projects the ideals of wearing, doing and being whatever you want. It is important to me as a designer to create clothes that make people feel empowered and confident when they wear them. This is why my collection uses a combination of fitted and oversized clothes as well as incorporates adjustable elements which enable the silhouette of the garment to be altered to what the consumer wants. Wherever the future takes me, I hope that I keep making people feel confident and empowered at the forefront of my work.
