Hey, I'm Beth, a fashion design graduate from USW
A South Wales based designer, active in the field of academic research surrounding the sports bra and breast biomechanics. Working to push the boundaries of function versus aesthetic in contemporary sportswear. With a vision to create thoughtful, innovative and fresh outcomes, to promote movement in every way.
My major interest is the relationship between functionality and aesthetics in sportswear, which is highlighted within my final dissertation topic, focussing on the Sports Bra. The vision is to provide aesthetic sportswear styles that make women feel good whilst performing well, aiming to maximise optimism and creativity through sportswear. Initially inspired by breast biomechanics and the female form, I love to try out new ways of working, such as using technical research methods to provide consumer based solutions.
INSPIRATION
My initial inspiration came from my dissertation research, focussing on the sports bra.
During an interview with Lisa Lindahl, who invented the first sports bra, I was shocked at not only how little the sports bra has been developed since 1977, but also the lack of education in breast health and support available to women. This led me to create my own motion capture experiment, allowing a rigorous analysis of the performance of traditional sports bras on different breast shapes and sizes. I was also able to understand what attributes contribute to a sports bra providing support.
I realised there is a lack of sports bras available to women which provide both comfort, support and aesthetic. I questioned why women should have to sacrifice feeling good, to be able to perform optimally. I related this to trend research surrounding all day active concepts and maximalist fusion aesthetics. From here my final collection concept was formed, a space to create aesthetic sportswear that make women feel good whilst performing well, enhancing the impact through contemporary sportswear.
