Beatrix Booth practices fashion design, drawing inspiration from the natural world. Her designs follow the avant-garde philosophy through a combination of textile and silhouette exploration. Challenging perceptions of femininity while also highlighting female strength and resilience is at the core of her work.
Through studying fashion I have naturally gravitated towards creating my own textiles to work with. I love taking traditional techniques (such as crochet, knitting and quilting) and creating contemporary works of art while also keeping these crafts alive. Using all my skills, particularly garment construction and styling, to fulfil my creative vision is something I really enjoy. The level of detail I like to include in my work is something I take pride in, and my garments always include handmade/hand finished elements.
INSPIRATION
The natural world is always something I have been interested in and my honours collection, SUPERNATURE, is an exploration of the similarities between ancient intelligence (fungi) and artificial intelligence, through a science fiction lens. The silhouettes are a balance between powerful and delicate – a reflection of female strength and resilience. I wanted to take the sci-fi femme-fatale and give her new power through the female gaze.
Ancient systems have created the foundation for life on Earth and will continue to shape ecosystems long after humans have existed. The science community has proposed that if any life was to be found on other planets there's a high possibility it would have similar characteristics to the humble mushroom. With the development of technology such as artificial intelligence, I wanted to explore the connections between two polar opposites: mushrooms and machines.
DETAIL
For the styling of my photoshoot I was inspired by sci fi films like Barbarella, Blade Runner and Fantastic Planet. I wanted the images to have an otherworldly appearance, with the main focus being on the colour, textures and silhouette of the garments. A common theme in sci-fi movies, particularly from the 1960s-80s, is the scantily clad femme fatale – purely an object of male desire. I wanted to take this archetype and give her new power through the female gaze. SUPERNATURE emanates divine feminine energy and has been designed to empower the wearer, whoever she may be.
