About Me

Hey I'm Aurora from the University of Salford

My collection explores obsessive and compulsive love shown through collecting and repetition of one item, fused with my Mum’s fixation with denim, as a child she wasn’t allowed to wear it because of its strong link with work ware. The collection holds an underlaying message of protecting and nurturing people who are expressive of their love and passions.

Obsessing and collecting items which help people tell their story I think, is a beautiful thing. The collection began when reading the book ‘Fanpages 2!’, that explores obsessive fan culture. My mum (Jonquil) being a young Machinist in Liverpool jeans manufacturer ‘Dudes’, would take home small offcuts from the overlocker whenever she would use a different weight, weave or colour of denim, hoard them as a memento, overtime collecting 30+ small remnants. Being told by her mum: ‘You’re not allowed denim Jonquil, that’s men’s work ware.’ didn’t sit right with her, in fact made her want it more.

INSPIRATION

The book 'Fanpages 2!' sparked my interest in obsessive fan culture and overwhelming love.

I find it so fascinating that people can be so obsessed and fixated with one thing, and that they love it that much they need so many of it to feel fulfilled and happy. I developed this idea of obsessiveness in my pre-collection by layering and overwhelming the dress with layers and layers of Rosettes, so it engulfed the whole garment.

For my final collection I refined and developed the idea of the denim rosettes, by playing with the proportions on the body. I have come to play with huge rosettes and the enlarged scalloped silhouette to give some more bold shapes to the collection.

DETAIL

The denim rosettes

Rosettes are crafted with Japanese black denim and Bull denim. Each piece is cut out exactly on laser cutting machinery, layered and bound together with a bar-tack. Pieced with denim in ode to my mum’s fascination for the fabric. I was inspired by a small, scalloped edge heart within the book ‘Fanpages 2!’, which edges reminded me of a rosette. I came to explore the Rosette as symbol of love, like an award or trophy for being passionate about your love. They are the perfect embodiment of pride and joy and presenting your love to the world.

I love handmade and crafted design, but also experimenting with fabric manipulation and textile techniques. I like to have fun, enjoy and love everything I do, it helps me come up with my best ideas.
