About Me

Hey! I'm Arneta, a graduate from Heriot-Watt University.

When designing I always incorporate my heritage into my garments and I believe that this creates collections that are different and unique.

BAHAU Collection A/W 2022 is inspired by the beautiful culture and tradition of the Dayak people in hinterland Borneo. This collection highlights the beauty and uniqueness of the tribe, translated into a series of colours, patterns, silhouettes and fabrics. I believe that the Dayak culture has not gotten the exposure it deserves, and now is the perfect time to reveal its many hidden beauty.

INSPIRATION

This collection is dedicated to my Dayak culture.

Among other Indonesian cultures and backgrounds, I've always found my Dayak heritage one of the more interesting one. In many parts of Indonesia, custom clothing represents more than just a piece of fabric to cover up, but it is a tangible representation of cultural tradition and values. Traditional dresses have been playing a key role in societal development, heritage preservation and cultural identity from an early age until this modern day.

This collection further explores the literal and non-literal meanings of custom clothing and their roles, and translates and contextualises them into the realm of today as an attempt to maintain and preserve the original values and intention of the clothing makers and wearers'. The success indicator is when people are able to understand the tales and immense values contained in the cultural symbols wrapped on one's body in a form of custom clothing.

DETAIL

Practicing the traditional beadwork crafts in my collection.

Dayak is known for its intricate, detailed and colourful handmade beadworks. Be it on their traditional costumes or accessories. For this collection, I included this tradition by hand stitching beads to the garments to either add dimension and texture or highlight the patterns. I want to capture the different social statuses that exist in the Dayak society by putting different levels of complexity in the beadworks on each look.

Embrace traditional beauty. Preserve heritage.
