About Me

My name is Aomi Inoue. My passion is textiles.

I was born and raised in a city surrounded by nature and green onion fields. That's why I love plants and flowers. When I design clothes, inspiration often comes from nature. I came to Tokyo at the age of 18 and entered Bunka Fashion College because I wanted to study fashion, which I have loved since I was a child.

During my studies at Bunka, I learned a lot of things like clothing design, patterns, sewing, textiles, and business. But I was most interested in textiles. I became more and more fascinated by fabrics with different textures depending on what they are made from. It was both amazing to make the fabric with my own hands and to print illustrations I designed. And when I created and chose textiles, I started working on my collection. I'm still constantly learning, but I'm enjoying every day and gradually gaining more knowledge about textiles.

INSPIRATION

Buddhas reborn as flowers

Cremation in Japan is a traditional way to bury the deceased. However, recently a new form of burial called "Jumokuso" becomes popular. It is a new type of natural burial that does not involve scattering the ashes. Flowering trees such as Rhododendron Azalea are planted to mark the burial place, and the installation of artificial objects such as tombstones are prohibited.

Inspired by this, I wanted to create a collection in which the dead are reborn as blooming trees and flowers, and the dead blend into nature to form a flowering forest. I designed each look like a blooming tree representing a person who has died, expressing a place of mourning.

DETAIL

~Holy Forest ~ Buddhas reborn as flowers ~

I chose 9 flowers and trees and thought about each of them like a person who has passed away with a different personality. I`ve chosen different varieties of azalea trees, cherries, and apricots which can be planted at the temple as a part of the funeral ceremony. I imagined how the colour and shape of each flower might be expressed in the design and started creating my own textiles with great attention to detail. For example, while creating a gradient from scratch inspired by the Japanese Blueberry plant for look 4, I liked the way how the colour went uneven due to hand dyeing, and it reminded me of how plants look in the natural world. Or look 7’s skirt and look 8’s top are made of biodegradable fabrics with unique designs. I created the fabric the way it was taken out of the soil to express the rebirth of the dead as flowering trees. Death has a dark and heavy image, but I wanted to create a sacred forest that incorporates the vividness and brightness of flowers in this collection.

“Effort makes flowers bloom” is my favourite phrase. In order to have good results, we must do our best every day. And don't forget to smile. With this thought I have achieved my goal many times.
