About Me

Hi, I'm Andrew, a Fashion Design Graduate from Leeds Arts University

Andrew Kirkbride is a Creative Commercial Designer based in Leeds. His exploration of print and textiles, combined with the texture of Knitwear creates bold and memorable pieces. Taking inspiration from Northern landmarks to explore Shape and Silhouette.

I am passionate about trend forecasting and working digitally. Confident in CAD, using Microsoft Suit (Excel, Powerpoint, Word) and Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator). Graduated from BA Fashion Design at Leeds Arts University. Highly organised and driven by the process of product development. I am hardworking and efficient in fast paced working environments. Strongly developed communication skills with great organisation and attention to detail. Confident in providing administration support while still being creatively driven.

INSPIRATION

My initial Inspiration began by Researching and Photographing Whitby Abbey.

This Project took inspiration from the Whitby Abbey Ruins destroyed in the Dissolution of the Monasteries 1536-1541. Allowing the Tudor fashions to also come into the project through the historical techniques used. Traditional crochet techniques, such as the Victorian and Irish crochet has inspired trims and panels, while linking to my fabric and print inspiration, combining traditional English interiors and wallpapers, with the damask fabrics used in Tudor England.

The Collection began to evolve through sampling and toiling, with crochet and pattern taking centre stage. Bold colour palettes with heavily detailed traditional textile print, being reflected in the exploration of texture, colour and panelling in the crochet. Classic menswear, often tailored pieces, took on the shapes developed from the Whitby Abbey research, while allowing the print and patterns to be displayed clearly and confidently.

MY WORK

PORTFOLIOS

DETAIL

I created a patchwork pair of Crochet Trousers using different yarn sizes, colours and hook sizes.

I began by sampling various crochet stitches and techniques using a range of yarn sizes and hook sizes, joining them together to create a large sample panel. I then sourced yarns using the colour palette of my other printed fabrics. I began creating these trousers by first making the ankle ribbing and working my way up, using the stitches and techniques I had sampled previously. The panel sizes and shapes were inspired by the brickwork of the ruins of Whitby Abbey. I gradually created a simple leg shape out of these panels by increasing at first, and then shaping the crotch towards the top.

"Right over the town is the ruin of Whitby Abbey, which was sacked by the Danes … It is a most noble ruin, of immense size, and full of beautiful and romantic bits" - Bram Stoker
