About Me

Hi! I'm Amy, Textile Design graduate from UCA Farnham.

Amy is a textile designer and maker, who specialised in woven textiles. Focusing on fine fibres Amy has refined her own style, creating bespoke hand woven cloth combined with printing techniques to make pieces which are truly one of a kind. Using traditional floor looms to hand craft each piece of cloth to the highest quality.

Growing up in rural Surrey, Amy spent most of her childhood exploring nature alongside her family, walking through the woods and collecting flowers. She represents these subtle retellings of her adventures and memories in a woven story. Through bold and hand dyed colour, she creates a harmony in her designs which reflects the peaceful calm she feels when exploring her surroundings. Interested in details, she focuses on delicate mock leno structures that manipulate the transparency of woven cloth, and creates small features in the cloth which are only seen from up-close.

INSPIRATION

'A Scrapbook of Memory' is a reflection of my Childhood scrapbook captured in handwoven cloth.

This project focuses on my Great Granny’s original hand painted cards she sent to us from across the country, these cards enclosed letters to keep us connected and were collected in our childhood scrapbooks by my mum. I am now fortunate enough that my Great Granny, at 90 years old, lives around the corner from my family home, and I have been able to share my creative journey with her.

Throughout the project I was focused on creating a reflection of my Great Granny's work in my own style, from paper into woven cloth. I also researched a lot into memory and wanted to capture different clarity of memory within my design, using warp printing before weaving to symbolise 'foggy' and fractured memories and bold prints after weaving to show clear memories in contrast. Joined by embroidery of words directly from the letters, these woven pieces read like a story.

DETAIL

Woven cloth and shadows.

When creating my own fabric I have always been interested in how the fine detailed structures interact with light, dancing and creating shadows. The floating weft which dashes across the woven surface creates an abstract interpretation of the written word and can be seen throughout the shadows on the ground too.

"Being creative is not so much the desire to do something as the listening to that which wants to be done: the dictation of the materials." -Anni Albers
