I am a passionate, creative and work-driven fashion designer, specialised in womenswear
I find fashion to be my element of expression; I like to exhibit my view on people and on everyday life through garments and illustrations, as well as what intrigues me and what I find beautiful. I enjoy the challenge of narrating their story and capturing their feelings through one drawing only. In my eyes, anything can be translated into art. When designing I go for effortless, timeless and feminine designs, and my aim is to use classic silhouettes and make them more avant-garde by experimenting with details and silhouettes.
INSPIRATION
In my final project, I decided to exhibit the real image of Sicily, a land that has often been and, to some extent, still is the stage of misdoings and shady challenges due to the influence of Cosa Nostra. However, my work has a different goal. It tries to exalt the true essence of this Italian region, an island that conceals beauties, brims with traditions, and is rich in history and culture. This is highlighted by the study of folk clothing and typical artefacts/crafts from the island.
What's more, Sicily is home to strong women who, over the decades, have fought hard for their own freedom, as well as for the liberty of their beloved land. Precisely, I look at Antimafia-supporting women (e.g. Rosaria Costa), farmers and policewomen costumes and uniforms.
DETAIL
I am really interested in showcasing, preserving, and celebrating both the culture and values of different countries. In particular, for my FMP I look at Sicilian traditions and craftsmanship, such as lace and crochet. Furthermore, I try to preserve yet modernise these very important arts by innovating them through more avant-garde techniques, in order to ultimately make them more suitable to today’s culture and audience. I used crochet pieces, made by my Italian grandma in the 60s, to realise and create my second-look dress. These crochet pieces, of different sizes and shapes, are strategically positioned and sewn into place in order to exalt both their beauty and the women’s body.
