INSPIRATION

THE UNCONCIOUS MIND

This concept is inspired by one of the art movements that started in the 1920s. Surrealism is based on dreams, unconscious thoughts, originally based on the Dada Movement. Sigmund Freud believed there a deep layer of the human mind where the memory and basic instinct were stored, which came from the unconscious mind. To simulate the unconscious mind is to make something playful at the same time disturbing, putting images that are not necessarily associated with each other.

Developing this concept even further and researching to understand surrealism and how it challenges the human mind; combining ordinary to extraordinary, human-like but not human. I decided to research various surrealism artists like; Claude Cahun, Sergei Parajanov, Man Ray and lots more.

MY WORK

PORTFOLIOS

DETAIL

EYES, EYES, EYES.

Part of surrealism is Automatism this is when an action is performed unconsciously and involuntary. To gain design inspiration I have gathered images from the artist separately and constructed a collage to gain unusual silhouettes. This also influenced my stand work and drape, where I have gathered scarps of fabric and sewn the seams together unconsciously making silhouettes for my future designs.

"No rules exist, and examples are simply life-savers answering the appeals of rules making vain attempts to exist." - Andre Breton
