About Me

Alice Hague - Fashion Knitwear Student @ NTU

As a lifelong fan of heavy metal music, the hedonistic genre of glam metal has sparked constant intrigue for it’s bizarre sexual ambiguity. For me their reckless attitude exudes mass sexuality. This attraction, alongside an enthusiasm for free-forming handcrafts, has dissolved pieces that focus on peeling and revealing the body.

Within the collection, the concept of skin tight ‘second-skins’ has drawn constant exploration. This forms adaptability lent itself to sculpting and shaping around the body. Alongside the skin tight, handcraft techniques highlight the sensitivity of craft and its processes. This element provides a bolder more freehand contrast – allowing balance and fluidity.

INSPIRATION

Initial Inspiration has been generated from rockstars of Glam Metals sexual ambiguity

These performers exuded mass sexuality through over sexualised performances, alongside skin tight clothing. These ripped and revealing pieces have developed ‘second-skin’ shape and silhouette which peel and reveal the body (but to not expose). Electronic body music has also been an influential force, characterized by its stark, sexual aesthetic. EBM fuses the roughness of metal alongside electronic music, contextualising the wearer as a follower of heavier, provocative music.

Time spent in Hong Kong – a vibrant urban landscape, has influenced primary research, informing a chaotic use of found colour and dynamic energy. Experience gained in HK whilst interning at a hand knit yarn company has given insight into the potentials and adaptability of hand knit and crochet, whilst triggering a love for these crafts.

DETAIL

Peeling and Revealing

Careful consideration has been taken when manufacturing holes within knitted fabrics. Such openings has been designed internally, and engineered through garment construction. Stretch yarn within the ‘second-skin’ allow fabric to be pulled and partially linked – forming holes that grow and wrap around the body. Tessellating free knit and crochet forms encourages the growth of organic gaps. This innate nature of hole placement, alongside paired elements layerability, eliminated focus - allowing a dissolve between pieces. Environmental responsibility has been put into practice by only linking and fully fashioning garments, but also through yarn choice. ‘Second-skin’ stretch yarns; PBT, an eco-friendly polymer and recycled polyester contents are sustainable manmade contents that increase garment longevity (AA Global Sponsorship). Craft yarns; certified 100% organic cotton, manufactured responsibly with metal free dye reduce environmental impact (KPC Yarns sponsorship).
