About Me

Hi! I'm Alex and I'm a Fashion Communicator.

Throughout my studies, I have aimed to explore trends, whether fashion focal or behavioral, and how these link contextually to aspects of psychology, sociology, history, and beyond. Through research and analysis, I try to understand the world better, and illustrate ideas at the convergence of satire and aesthetic appeal.

My predominant in my work is to visualise the intangible, through the use of graphic illustration, photography, collage, and written word. As a content creator, I approach everything I do with style and a good sense of humour.

INSPIRATION

I am inspired by the ongoing, hazy debate that surrounds cancel culture.

Cancel culture has become one of the most prominent and divisive talking points of the past few years. Difficult to define in its overarching impact, the movement has a wealth of contextual links to psychology, sociology and media theory, while impacting the realms of celebrity and brand in a way not quite yet understood. Cancel culture is said to be based on liberalism, social justice and progression, but allegedly hinders free speech, stifles debate, and encourages public shaming - creating a paradox.

While commonly portrayed to be a digital-age threat, I believe cancel culture to be an innate human behavior, present throughout human history. For my final year work, I explored the concept through two outputs; 'CANCELLATION NATION', a Trend Publication documenting the potential future impacts of cancel culture and associated movements, and 'BACKSPACE', an editorial magazine exploring cancellations gone by, illustrating famous historical tales of woe through satirical, cancel-age storytelling.

DETAIL

Project Overview

Inspired by controversial female figures from history, my Final Major Project aims to illustrate cancel culture's position as an archaic human behaviour, ever-present throughout history. BACKSPACE magazine aims to create an anthology of cancellations, as a means of quashing common perceptions, deflecting the instilled moral panic that surrounds it, and illustrating that if anything, cancel culture's modern impacts were much worse in centuries prior. The publication also aims to depict evolutions in human behaviour, and how aspects of power, royalty, religion, superstition, war, and the media can all contribute to the rise and fall of specific individuals.

The only real things in life are the unexpected things. Everything else is just an illusion.
