I am an International Student from Latvia. I came to United Kingdom to discover more experience in the fashion industry. I am a womenswear designer with a vast knowledge in sewing and pattern cutting, having a keen interest in story telling through garment designs. My thoughtfulness of nature, and the future of innovation is the key motivation behind my work.
My ambition for involvement in as many projects and collaborations possible, has given me the chance to work with many different brands. Placement year was an amazing opportunity to understand the behind the scenes of the business, working in production, operating in teams, and producing garments for different brands. Through my time at the University, it has given me the knowledge to think more outside of the box. Expanding my understanding of the industry has increased my experimental ideas in making ecological materials as well as upcycling garments from second hand clothes.
INSPIRATION
My collection is titled ‘Healing Through the Ocean’ which has a personal meaning to me. A collection inspired by the trauma of anxiety and healing through the ocean. Water has always given me a harmonious feeling and freedom to my illusions, which sometimes arise without reason. I have always been interested in finding out what kind of aquatic animals live under water in their special appearance. Its like being in a completely different world and being next to the sea gives that special positive feeling.
Exploring different materials, designs, fabrics, details, and various silhouettes to create an overall appearance that is impressive, beautiful and shows inner feelings and emotions. It’s always important finding yourself in a positive way of being happy and unique as the way you are. We can be calm as the ocean and ride the life journey like waves as beautiful souls. That is magical. As an inspiration I took manta-rays in every shape, silhouettes and details as well as its movement through the ocean.
DETAIL
I have used contrasting binding to create wave-like fins and rippling effects through layering pattern pieces in a meticulous way to represent manta-rays movement through the water. This idea came from previous project by creating a dress with binding and layering the shapes, and this helped me to understand that I want to carry on this design detail and create a full collection with bright binding being inspired by the bright colours of the ocean animals and corals. I believe the details are just as important, which is why I created contrast binding for every garment that gives out-stand shapes.
