About Me

Hi, Im Sameera and I am a Fashion Design graduate from UCLAN

Hi, my name is Sameera Mohmed and I have just completed my final year of university studying BA Hons Fashion Design. During my three years at university I have developed a vast range of skills, from pattern-cutting, trend forecasting, sewing, CAD's and developing silhouettes.

Despite spending the first two years of university is lockdown due to the pandemic, I have seen a real progression in my passion and future career. At the start of 2022, I was fortunate enough to have been picked as the Boohoo X Graduate Fashion Foundation winner for their recent sustainable collection. This gave my name and work recognition within the fashion industry and local magazines and newspapers, also being able to work amongst the design team at Boohoo.

INSPIRATION

My mother has always been my biggest inspiration.

‘Love is Blind’ is based on my mother’s medical eye condition Wet Macular Degeneration, where one loses sight in the visual field, which is generally caused by abnormal blood vessels that leak fluid or blood into the macula. My mother has inspired me all my life and her way of dealing with this condition needed celebrating in a creative conclusion to my studies. My Indian culture also inspires my final collection and the two elements go together to create something unique to me.

My collection explores many different textile’s techniques, such as hand embroidery, braille inspired eyelet designs, digital prints inspired by my research and unique silhouettes that blend eastern and western aesthetics. Styles include exaggerated hareem pants, mandarin collars and draped blouses to give a nod to the saree way of dressing

MY WORK

PORTFOLIOS

DETAIL

Using the intricate details of the eye to create contemporary textiles and prints

The textiles are inspired from the Wet Macular Degeneration, from creating an authentic mapped vein inspired machine embroidered dress, to distorted shapes through impaired vision influencing my prints, which are one of the long-term effects of Wet Macular Degeneration. Another aspect led me into recycling scrap optical lenses to create a contemporary way of adding oversized sequins as decorative details and creating braille patterns with coloured eyelets which spell out my collection title ‘Love is Blind’. The fabrics and trims used in this collection were all carefully sourced from a village in India called Bharuch. I utilised 100% natural raw silk, which was dyed to my colour palette specifications at the back of a dye house in the village.

'Love is Blind'- a collection designed with love and honour for my mother.
