About Me

Hi! I'm Qadra a Fashion Design Graduate from UCLAN

Born in Somali, raised in Northen Ireland. I didn't have much exposure to my routes. I want to celebrate my heritage and background through my designs to express myself. I handmake my fabrics Inspired by the traditional techniques used in Somalian culture, including commonly used colours inspired by Somali 'Guntiino' fabric.

I heavily inspired by designs through my culture and hertiage. This helped me develop my distinct style of draping the fabric around the body to create different styles and ways that you can wear. Each garment is made up of four to five metres of appliqué stripes on the lengths of fabric to create a more bolder and modern interpretation of 'Guntiino' fabric.

INSPIRATION

Exploring my culture and heritage.

This collection I journeyed back to my Somalian heritage & culture taking inspiration from the traditional striped ‘Guntiino’ fabric, which my mom donated to me. I contemporised this authentic textile by patch working different colour tones of fabrics.

My silhouette investigated traditional & contemporary draping techniques fusing the old with directional fashion styling. I am always inspired and proud of my heritage & looked at ways to blend traditional textile crafts with modern & relevant fashion silhouettes. By hand making all my fabrics I have created a collection unique to my heritage and personal narrative.

PORTFOLIOS

DETAIL

handmade fabric inspired by Somali culture

I used textile techniques of patch work to create my own fabric. I was inspired the traditional striped ‘Guntiino’ fabric, I contemporised this authentic textile by creating my own appliqued stripes on the lengths of fabric to create bolder more modern interpretations. The colours I choose are commonly used Somalian traditional garments All my collections are layering and traditional draping that you can style and wear different ways.
