I was inspired by the increase of gender neutrality in todays society and the lack of representation mainstream fashion has for individuals that want to experiment with their clothing, without the pressures of gender labelling and what is deemed 'acceptable'.
By creating 'BLURR' a collection that blurs the lines between Topshop and Topman to celebrate ASOS's new ownership of the brands, allows these well known fashion retailers to step into a market that many other mainstream brands haven't ventured into, catering for a generation who is more open minded when it comes to gender and sexuality. The message I have voiced throughout is; dress however you want to dress and forget the ''rules''.
INSPIRATION
I have a friend that doesn't follow the gender 'rules' the industry uses to categorise fashion, he likes to wear whatever he feels good in. He finds that people refer to him as female because he likes to wear clothing that is deemed more 'feminine'. This inspired me to research, to understand why there is still stigma around what each gender should wear. I found that this is highly unrepresented within mainstream fashion. This needs to change considering we are a generation more open to gender fluidity.
It's necessary to be mindful of the ever-growing non-binary community in today’s society and this is something that needs to be represented. In order for me to reflect this message that BLURR portrays, the promotional aspects provide empowering slogans to successfully articulate the meaning behind the collaboration to ensure it is seamlessly communicated to the target market. These androgynous styles are bold, alternative and cater for every body shape, without being categorised by gender.
DETAIL
Due to restrictions caused by COVID-19, I hired out equipment from the university and shot these images myself at home. I wanted the backdrop to be simple due to wanting the main focus to be on the clothing and the empowering slogans. The backdrop was made using decorating sheets and the stools were donated to me that I up-cycled to use as props.
