About Me

Hi, i’m Megan, a fashion graduate from Norwich University of the Arts.

Megan’s collection is called House of Hot Entity, the concept is to create a genderless, multisized collection that allows anyone that wears these garments to feel comfortable and accepted. The inspiration was queer culture, the art form of drag and performance pieces. She specialised in textiles techniques to represent aspects of the concept.

With being apart of the queer community it allows me feel seen and accepted. I’ve always struggled with image and feeling confident, therefore I decided to design a multisized collection that is drafted from a size 18 mannequin but can be adjusted to fit multiple body shapes and sizes. I noticed a lack of work that featured inclusive sizing or plus sized garments so I felt it was important to create an inclusive collection that represents the world around us.

INSPIRATION

My initial inspiration started with 1950’s hollywood and the controversial ‘Some like it Hot’(1959).

Growing up I have always loved costume, especially vintage hollywood fashion. By looking at the film Some like it Hot it explored the first mainstream movie that featured drag queens, I then explored the androgony behind Marlene Dietrich and her fashion. I decided to take historical research and combine with contemporary queer fashion to create ideas as to how I can introduce unique queer fashion/costume that hasn’t been explored before.

The lack of representation of plus sized fashion is what drove me to create clothes that can fit a range of sizes. With the idea of someone being able to wear my garments to a drag show or gay club and feel empowered encourages me to explore the design techniques of garment inclusivity. The colour palette is inspired by lights displayed within gay clubs and my prints have been created through melting lipsticks, this links in to my own personal interests of makeup art but also it links massively to drag.

DETAIL

Using trims such as cords and toggles to embrace inclusivity, shape and size.

To produce multi functional garments that fit individuals of multiple shapes and sizes I experimented with cords and toggles to allow the garments to cinch in and reveal/conceal parts of the body. These garments allow the wearers to adjust these garments to fit the way they feel most comfortable in. The concept of these is for everyone to feel accepted within them. The print is also bright within itself so combining these two elements together of silhouette and print it allows people to feel seen but in a glamorous way. These garments are designed to interchange but also for either viewers/partiers of drag shows and gay clubs to wear and/or the costumes of performers to wear. In this image you can see the fabric ruched up to create interesting textures and shapes for the wearer.
