About Me

My name is Emily Tate. I am a soon-to-be fashion design graduate.

I strive to discover and adapt to each challenge and new stimulus I encounter, expanding on my awareness as an individual and as an artist. I am enthralled by the world around me and the inspiration I can find from the people and places around me, as exhibited in my previous project works showcased in my portfolio.

In my portfolio works, I encourage new explorations, returning to old studies, and applying my prior knowledge to future projects, as for my personal works, I interact with so many unique and incredible people and clients and work alongside them to create inventive and outlandish garments. In the future, I hope to learn more in practice, find new and exciting stimuli and apply my research to my work, designing and making new and interesting pieces. Particularly I find myself maintaining an emphasis on creativity, comfort and freedom as my main components.

INSPIRATION

Freedom. My vision.

My concept revolves around the idea of personal freedom, the usage of conceal and reveal and that comfort and style should always be main features of garments. In this concept I have explored personal freedom post the pandemic, seeing how peoples clothing choices have changed and how personal preference is more common than ‘fitting in’. People are less concerned with the way they look to others and are exploring new feelings now that the isolation days over leading to new experiences and expression.

Colour and silhouette are huge influences in these designs as there can be no restriction and revolve around practicality and comfort. I used light fabrics with the presence of high contrast, a base of black with bright and vibrant colours. I needed this collection to create a bold take on personal preference and self-expression most likely leading into utility wear and workwear. Some of my biggest inspirations for this project are rave culture Melbourne shuffle pants, high contrast and customization.

DETAIL

Additional information.

Looking onto the details of my collection, I made them as customisable as I could, incorporating in d-rings and dog clips so the wearer could freely change the straps around, take the pocket off the front of the dungarees and turn it into a purse if they so wanted. Additionally, I utilised the drop hole pattern and used it on different scales to create unique shapes and silhouettes, such as the drop hole going the whole way through the dress, and the drop hole on the trouser leg of the dungarees, that can double as a lower pocket. Each garment reflects the other in more ways than one, and my personal favourite is the Hi-Viz material I used. Its such a wonderful hidden surprise. When the light hits it just right, the whole collection brightens the room, it is covered with colour, and it dances over the garments so wonderfully. In my opinion, I am confident I was successful in reflecting my concept of freedom.
