About Me

Hi, I'm Chloe, a Fashion Promotion graduate from USW.

Welcome to my portfolio! I have developed a passion and interest for digital media and fashion publication throughout my time on the course. My final major project allowed me to express myself and explore my creative direction, focusing on culture and heritage, experience, and pop culture.

My course has given me the opportunity to challenge and raise awareness for problems that matter to me. For my final major project, I decided to create a magazine for Asian women which focuses on self-care on a deeper level, beauty, racial inequality, representation and pop culture. My culture is very important to me because it shapes my values, beliefs, and traditions, and it makes me who I am. My culture and heritage has a strong impact on how I express myself, my ideas and my creativity. I will continue to develop my potential and aim to be successful within the fashion industry.

INSPIRATION

"You're pretty for an Asian"

Growing up Asian in a predominantly Western community, I always had this pressure to look a certain way as beauty standards in Asia are strict and toxic. Asian girls are constantly being told what is not beautiful and they end up neglecting their natural beauty traits because they strive for perfection and the ideal beauty standard. I believe that we should accept who are, and learn to love our flaws instead of trying to be someone who we're not because perfection does not exist.

Not only the struggle with body image, but also the discrimination and racial abuse that we Asians experience living in the UK that has inspired me to use my voice to address and raise awareness of these issues. I have dealt with body image and racism since I was young and it's personal to me. Therefore, I want to provide a space that authenticates Asian women's experiences in the lifestyle/beauty industry, that empowers Asian women, and for all our voices to be heard because our stories matter.

DETAIL

A magazine by and for Asian women authenticating their experiences through self-care and pop culture

Wabi-Sabi, is a fashion and lifestyle publication that highlights my vision for more inclusive fashion media that “authenticates Asian women’s experiences”. Combining incisive interviews, articles, and creative writing with a range of illustrations and photography, the magazine comes together to a professional standard. Wabi Sabi offers an impactful perspective on representation, is culturally informed, celebrates difference, and challenges racial inequality within the industry with passion and courage. By featuring art alongside critical and creative commentary by and for Asian women, the magazine offers a pioneering and multifaceted approach to fashion media.
