In recognition of the unparalleled level of support, commentary and guidance provided to UK trained fashion students, their academic staff, Colleges and Universities, associated with the Graduate Fashion Week Foundation, we have the honour of naming the GFW 2018 Catwalk Award, ‘The Hilary Alexander Trailblazer Award’, after the renowned UK-based Fashion Journalist, Hilary Alexander OBE.

This Award has been created in order to capture and reflect Hilary’s evident enthusiasm for new, fresh, and unpublished fashion design. The winning collection must provide a refreshing and innovative direction, it must address the important issue of sustainability; and illustrate the ground-breaking, fashion-forward thinking that the UK is renowned for. In its realisation of these criteria, it should also excite the eye and, thus, national/international media interest.

Judges will judge on the following criteria:

  • Innovation in cut, texture, silhouette ad surface decoration

  • Exploration of sustainability

  • Experimentation with fabric and material

  • Visual excitement / photogenic appeal

  • A newsworthy story

Selection Judges will view all university shows and decide which collections should be put forward for the GFW Catwalk Awards. The Selection Judges will include four external judges and two members drawn from the Executive Committee.

All collections must have a maximum of six outfits. Garments should be manufactured to a STANDARD SIZE 10-WOMEN and/or 38-MEN

After the final Catwalk Shows on Tuesday 4th June 2019, the Selection Judges will reform and select the top 25 collections for final consideration for the GFW Catwalk Awards. It is possible for universities to have more than one collection in the final 25.

Course/Programme Leaders and students will receive a text or phone call, late on the Tuesday evening if they have been shortlisted for the GFW Catwalk Awards.

The 25 collections will take part in the Best of Graduate Fashion Week show in front of the GFW Catwalk Award Judges. Each catwalk award has a panel of high profile industry experts who will be judging their nominated category. Collections maybe considered for more than one award.
